All of you no doubt read about/witnessed the destruction brought on by Hurricane Ike. Like Katrina, Ike did some damage to a lot of property, including one of south Texas' greatest venues: The Old Quarter Cafe.
The Old Quarter has hosted countless performers on its hallowed stage, including the legendary Townes Van Zandt, who recorded a live album there. A few months ago, I had the privilege to perform alongside Kristy Kruger while we opened for the Band of Heathens (Austin, TX). It was a magical night. Wrecks, the owner, is a kind man who just loves music. A close friend of Townes and many other songwriters, he created one of the true havens for the singer/songwriter. He played bass for Townes, as well as Lucinda Williams and the legendary Lightnin' Hopkins.
I recently inquired about another gig at Old Quarter, and Wrecks wrote me back to say he's not sure when he'll be able to open again. The thought of this great venue disappearing does not sit well with me. I think if enough music lovers out there here about Wrecks' tough times, we can get the doors opened soon.
I'm asking everyone who reads this to take a few minutes to look at The Old Quarter's website and see what their specific needs are at this moment. If you can help in any way, even if it's just an encouraging email, I know it would mean a lot to Wrecks and everyone down there. The website is
www.oldquarteracousticcafe.com. Please check it out, and see if there's anything you can do to help.
Thanks for supporting independent music,
Dylan
